I'm trying really really hard, but I can't come up with a reason that DRM will cost human life. Under what circumstances would not being able to make ILLEGAL copies of media cause someone to die? Or suffer any physical injury for that matter.

Blueray & HD-DVD are looking less and less appealing. They are going to do to this what they did to DAT all those years ago... (Which is why DAT never made it as a digital format).

Hollywood is filthy rich. I'm not. Why would I want to pay an outrageous price for a blu-ray or hd-dvd player and then find out that I have to pay a premium for a movie that I would just as soon wait to be shown on tv where I can record it with my 'antique' VHS VCR's that don't care about DRM bullshit. If they refuse to play it on NTSC analog broadcast then I must not need to see it all that bad. I am not throwing out $5,000 worth of good VHS, DVD players, televisions, and my existing tape and dvd collection to spend over $10,000 to replace them all, then have to cough up excess money to support Moneywood. If a generic and rewriteable blu-ray recorder comes out I might buy it as a back up device, but if it has built in DRM then I will probably stick with my dual layer DVD.

well, the copy protection on regular DVDs was broken. give it some time and we'll break this too. information has a nasty tendency to get out, and once its out, there's really no way to get it back in the bag.

DRM does not only apply to media - the concept extends to ANY digital access-restriction technology.

Let's say you've purchased a new luxury car recently and as a part of the purchase agreement you signed away your right to perform 'unauthorized' repairs or modifications to your vehicle. Let's also say that the bonnet/hood is locked and can only be opened by a digital code transmitted via satellite.


Now, an emergency arises. Let's say a cyclone approaches and your deluxe vehicle won't start due to a flat battery. But sheer coincidence you have a spare battery with you.

Unfortunately the cyclone has knocked out cell communications so you can't call the car manufacturer and ask them to open the bonnet.


And here comes the cyclone so you have to make a choice..
a. stay and die
b. bypass the lock on the bonnet, replace the battery and drive to safety.


Assuming you chose 'b', go straight to jail for 5 years you fucking pirate!

i am a big fan of revolutions. no money, no lies seems really cool but I understand those people. Think, you have a movie studio and you make a movie that costs 100 million dollars. Would you not do EVERYTHING to prevent people from copying a media (blu-ray or hd-dvd) that you sell foer 20 bucks or more.

The RIAA/MPAA are collectively called the MAFIAA (Music And Film Industry Association of America). Why don't they just remove the DMCA entirely? Really they should remove DMCA. I did write a XMLDVD format http://zzo38computer.cjb.net/xmldvd but it isn't finish yet. Also, AACS algorithm is described in documents you can download for free, but you still need the key to use encrypted Blu-ray and HD-DVDs. Which means that you can write free open source software to use AACS but you will have to enter the key manually, and they won't give you the key unless you pay them, which also make it stupid. Anyways I don't like HDTV or HD-DVD/blu-ray either. I also don't like the abuse of Java in blu-ray. Go to the government please, and tell them to get rid of DMCA! Or at least, tell them to make patent laws and DMCA laws to not apply for free open source software.

I agree that DRM sucks, and that me must boycot it, and certainly not buy it. However, what good does saying fuck you here and fuck you there? I try to tell people around me about DRM, what it does and why I prefer free software.
Acting so agressively doesn't really get us anywhere, except for that it only makes us, being (relatively) few in numbers, look like a bunch of slating zealots. What does make a difference, however, is boycotting DRM reasonably, while nourishing free software.

You don't absolutely have to buy a DVD of any kind for most movies, since they usually appear on television after 3-6 months and then you can record them on your VHS. The whole 25 GB for a super hi res movie is now kind of lost since the Mpeg4/Divx/ high compression encoding came out. I have some movies that look good after downloading and a 2 hour movie only takes about 1.2GB. True high definition is 1080 high so that is twice the information as NTSC at the vertical. Now think about adding nearly 2,000 pixels wide and you are looking at about 3Mpixels per frame instead of NTSC and maybe 0.4Mp per frame. Since the compression level goes up with redundancy of showing, oh, a blue sky or much of what is recorded it should be possible to put a full length movie on a 4.7GB DVD with the new compression, so why even bother with 25GB disks at all. I never watch the trailers or leaders and I only want English so why even bother with Blu-ray or HD-DVD? Let them both die out and wait for a 100GB disc using UV, which should be possible in the very near future. If Hollywood starts putting new movies on one of these formats and not plain old DVD then just boycott it and maybe they will learn. As far as Blu-ray or HD-DVD the players are too expensive and the burners and media are still way up there. I can buy a 500GB hard drive for about $100 these days and that trumps Blu-ray by 20 times the capacity. Make Joe Average realize that he is getting screwed and if it sinks in then either Japan, Inc., or China will get the idea by way of no sales and no dollars.
Money talks, no matter in what country. My choice would be to run everything through the computer and use external drives (which now have gotten to the holy Terabyte). There are ways to defeat this crap but Microsoft is all in favor of DRM, so does that say something about greed?
Visually, high def 1080P does not impress me because the action is usually at the center of the screen anyway.
A good movie is worth watching even on NTSC and a bad movie is not worth the bother of putting on standard or high definition disks. Wait until 2009 when the FCC bans analog broadcasting and things should shake out.

I work in video professionally and watching a 2 hour movie compressed to 1.2GB would look like a Video CD. I think, the people who don't understand why we have CDs...Cassettes sound good enough...and think that DVD is a crystal clear picture...like looking through a window... need to stop complaining, if you could readily afford the technology then you wouldn't complain, would you? It's all because you cannot afford it and are afraid that one day you won't be able to watch TV or your DVDs because you cannot afford to switch. You look for any reason to badmouth the new technology, guess what, stop. DivX is a joke, any compression that can compress 2 hours of a movie into 1.2GB, as of right now, cannot do a good enough job to have the end result called Hi-Def. The ultimate goal is not the best looking compressed movies, taking up the least amount of space...the goal is the least amount of compression and taking the least amount of space. One day they will be able to fit the exact same quality as the studio master on a DVD sized disc. We're not there yet, but we will be some day. People who believe that DivX and MPEG-4 should be used to compress 25 hours of Hi-Def onto a standard DVD disc...it's a good thing you do not have a job in the movie industry, a very good thing. DivX and MPEG-4 andH.264 were created to store movies on the internet in such a quality you could say "looks pretty good considering I downloaded it for free in less than 2 minutes." They were never created to make anyone say "Wow, I'm glad I spend $14.99 on this movie, it's like looking through a window." You'd have to be Ray Charles or Hellen Keller to really say something like that.

What the hell does 1080P have to do with the center of your screen? The image does not look any better the closer it gets to the center of the screen, you cannot find any legitimate information on the relationship of the video to the center of the screen and the quality that backs up what you're saying. 1080P could be used to compress a full screen image. You're getting widescreen confused with 1080P. In the late 80's there were some analog Hi-Def broadcasts in Europe that were not widescreen, as far as I know. DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU COMPLAIN! Anyone can go around and say...Blu-Ray is $25 and they encode the disc so you can only watch it 10 times then you have to buy a dew disc. The player can only be used to watch 1000 movies then you have to buy a new player. If you turn off your TV while a movie is playing it will short out all the electricity in your house and cost 1000s of dollars to get it fixed. if the media industry really wanted to do some DRM that would work, they would make arrangements with all the computer industry and ISP's to charge every living IP $5 a month. That times 1,000,000,000 is a lot of money to pay the artists. But fact is they don't want you to know the real numbers and want to make you believe they loose money over copies. The reason why people copy stuff is that they can't afford to buy it. banning copies is not creating more money for people to buy the content. In fact it might bring popularity down for some artists.
